About "pointy screws":

Pointy screws may be called "Self-Tapping", "Sheet Metal" or "Wood Screws". They are all great for model building and repairs. They work in wood, fiberglass, plastic and just about any other material!. In fact, self-tapping and sheet metal screws are often better for model building because of the nice aggressive threads that go all the way to the top of the screw.

The bottom line is that so called "self-tapping and "Sheet metal" screws are extremely popular with experienced modelers!
